Mets Acquire Right-Handed Starter in Pitching Upgrade

New York Strengthens Rotation

NEW YORK (AP) - The New York Mets have bolstered their starting rotation by obtaining right-handed pitcher Paul Blackburn in a deal with the Oakland Athletics.

Blackburn, 29, brings experience and a solid track record to the Mets. The 2022 season marked his breakout year, as he finished with a 9-8 record, a 4.28 ERA, and 121 strikeouts in 27 starts.

The Mets have been in pursuit of pitching depth throughout the off-season. With Jacob deGrom and Max Scherzer sidelined with injuries, Blackburn is expected to provide stability and innings behind Justin Verlander and Kodai Senga.

The acquisition of Blackburn continues the Mets' aggressive approach to building a competitive roster for the 2023 season. The team has also added Carlos Correa, Jameson Taillon, and David Robertson in recent weeks.
