Health Department Urges Awareness and Prevention
HONOLULU, Hawaii – The Hawaii Department of Health (DOH) has confirmed one travel-related case of dengue virus on Oahu. The individual traveled to a region where the virus is known to be present.
Dengue is a mosquito-borne virus that can cause fever, headache, muscle and joint pain, nausea, and vomiting. In severe cases, it can lead to hemorrhagic fever and even death. There is no specific cure for dengue, but treatment can help relieve symptoms.
The DOH is urging residents and visitors to take precautions to prevent mosquito bites and reduce the risk of infection. These precautions include:
- Wearing long sleeves and pants when outdoors
- Using insect repellent containing DEET, picaridin, or IR3535
- Covering windows and doors with screens
- Removing standing water from around homes and yards
The DOH is also conducting surveillance and control activities in the area where the case was reported to prevent further spread of the virus.
